The meet & greet with The Phil Collins Story was about to happen as the early evening began with a moderate wait just outside of the theater’s doors. Just prior to entering the theater and waiting in a new line, my new friend Patrick and I, along with the group of 30 or so people in line, received our band laminate and t-shirt. We soon saw Roman, Tatiana, Vlad, and Eugene waiting for us around the corner, and were escorted to meet the band after a very short wait. Especially Vlad and Eugene were welcoming and gracious, and each took time to interact with us. After receiving an autographed tour poster and having our picture taken with the band, we walked back outside to wait for the official entry time.
Sumo Cyco took the stage with an active and engaging female singer, similar to The Phil Collins Story. They kept the crowd energized throughout their set and even enjoyed two moments entering the crowded floor while playing. From my perspective, The Browning also gave a strong effort, but the crowd was ready for our first-time headliner to begin.
Following The Browning’s set, after a lengthy wait, The Phil Collins Story began with “Teacher Teacher” as the lights dropped. The sold-out crowd went crazy as Tati sang about a self-proclaimed preacher. Other songs in the set included “I Speak Astronomy,” “Dreadful Moments,” “Who Is Gonna Be The One?,” “Perennial,” and “Captain Clock,” which absolutely screamed. Next was “Outlander,” followed by “No Hoard Of Value” and “Cloud Factory.” After some quiet time to catch our breath, we heard the opening riff to “Bad Water,” which was moody and moving. They weren’t done with the new songs, as “Retrospection” came a bit later in the set, and their new reggae-tinged song “Judgement (& Punishment)” was also included. For a moment, I thought the venue’s lights were coming on, but after the crowd continued roaring chants of “The Phil Collins Story! The Phil Collins Story!,” the band came out and rewarded us with an encore of “Pisces.” The band showed great respect to the crowd before walking off the stage.
